This program is built for orthopedic practice employees—including medical assistants, athletic trainers, nurses, cast techs, and clinical support staff—who are either new to casting or want to standardize and elevate their current skills. No prior casting experience is required to begin.
At the very start of the program, team members have the opportunity to take the Orthopedic Allied Professional (OAP) exam, a foundational assessment with no prior experience required—making it an ideal entry point to validate baseline knowledge of orthopedic casting concepts.
As they progress through the structured content, they build toward eligibility for the Registered Orthopedic Technologist (ROT) exam. ROT certification requires at least one year of casting experience under clinical supervision and active ASOP membership, and is included with a two‑year membership cycle—allowing participants who meet those criteria to sit for the certification examination at no additional exam cost.
In short: if you work in orthopedics, your team can take the OAP exam immediately to establish baseline—all while working through this structured program toward ROT eligibility and certification, provided they meet the experience and membership requirements as they advance.
Participants may take the OAP (Orthopedic Allied Professional) exam at the start of the program. Those who meet ASOP’s eligibility criteria (1 year of casting experience + active membership) can qualify to take the ROT (Registered Orthopedic Technologist) exam upon or after program completion.
The OAP exam is ideal for those new to orthopedic casting and requires no prior experience. The ROT exam, on the other hand, is a higher-level credential designed for individuals with at least one year of supervised casting experience. This program helps bridge the gap between the two certifications.
Yes. The 8 module program (for example week by week) is recommended, but practices can adjust the pacing based on staffing, patient volume, or onboarding needs. The program is designed to be flexible without sacrificing structure.
